In Memory of Dr. Dong Soo Kim

Dr. Dong Soo Kim, 85, of Mechanicsville, VA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 10, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hannah Sook Paik; daughters, Susanna Kim Villano (Michael) and Stephanie Kim; sister, Soon Myung Kim; grandchildren, Marisa Simon (Erik), Mike Villano (Liz), Anthony Villano (Hind), Rocky Villano, Atlas “Maria” Wass and Julia Wass; and his great-granddaughter Shama Villano.

Dr. Kim came to the United States in 1961 to pursue his degree in ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He went on to receive his Masters in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh and finally he earned his Doctorate at the University of Chicago. Dr. Kim was a professor for over 30 years and retired from Norfolk State University.
After retirement, he returned to Korea where he taught for 6 more years and published over 10 books. He also dedicated his life to peace, justice and the reunification of Korea.
God blessed him with an extra 25 years after receiving a liver transplant. He also served as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church where he proudly shared God’s Word with His people.

김동수 박사님을 추모하며

버지니아 메카닉스빌에 거주하던 김동수 박사님(향년 85세)께서 2021년 5월 10일 월요일에 주님의 품으로 돌아가셨습니다. 그는 56년간 동고동락한 아내 백한나 숙 여사님, 두 딸 수잔나 김 빌라노(마이클)와 스테파니 김, 여동생 김순명, 그리고 손주 마리사 사이먼(에릭), 마이크 빌라노(리즈), 앤서니 빌라노(힌드), 라키 빌라노, 아틀라스 “마리아” 와스, 줄리아 와스, 증손녀 샤마 빌라노가 유가족으로 남았습니다.

김 박사님은 1961년 미국으로 건너가 피츠버그 신학교에서 목회학 학위를 추구하셨습니다. 이후 피츠버그 대학교에서 사회복지학 석사 학위를, 시카고 대학교에서 박사 학위를 취득하셨습니다. 그는 30년 넘게 교수로 재직하시며 노퍽 주립대학교(Norfolk State University)에서 정년퇴임하셨습니다.

은퇴 후에는 한국으로 돌아가 6년간 강의를 이어가며 10권 이상의 책을 저술하셨습니다. 그는 한반도의 평화, 정의, 그리고 통일을 위해 헌신하며 평생을 바치셨습니다.

하나님께서는 간 이식 수술 이후 그에게 25년의 축복된 시간을 허락하셨습니다. 김 박사님은 장로교회의 장로로도 섬기시며 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 사역에 자랑스럽게 헌신하셨습니다.
