In Memory of Rev. Howard Kim

Reverend Dr. Howard Young Kyong Kim, passed away from this life to more life in the early morning of August 6, 2020, at the age of 64. He is survived by his wife, Gail, beloved sons and a daughter, and beloved grandchildren.

Young Kyong Kim was born in Korea and immigrated to the U.S. during his high school years. He received a M.Div. (1987) from Columbia Theological Seminary in Georgia, a Th.M. Pastoral Care and Counseling (1989) from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, and a D. Min. Practical Theology (2017) from Claremont School of Theology, California. He was ordained in the PCUSA by the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta on June 24, 1989. Following ordination, he served as assistant pastor at the Korean Church of Brooklyn, New York. He then went to serve 1 Β½ years at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Seoul, Korea as associate missionary. Howard then came to Los Angeles, first serving as an assistant pastor at Haeram (now called β€œChurch of Peace”) Presbyterian Church, and then the assistant pastor at the Korean Independent Presbyterian Church in Artesia.

Howard was a cherished member of the Presbyterian Peace Network for Korea (PPNK) from its inception. He was among the original group that gathered at the Stony Point Center in 2017 to form the organization, and his commitment to justice and peace has left an indelible mark on our community.

Even before his involvement with PPNK, Howard was a steadfast advocate for social change. In 2011, he participated in a protest on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., alongside Martin Han, Sung Man Kim, and Syngman Rhee during the Occupy Movement. His dedication to grassroots activism reflected his deep desire to see meaningful social transformation.

In November 2017, Howard joined a delegation of General Assembly leaders on a trip to Korea, where they sought reconciliation and offered an apology for the tragic massacre of civilians by American soldiers at No Gun Ri in 1950. His participation in this significant act of acknowledgment and healing highlighted his unwavering commitment to justice and his compassion for those affected by historical injustices.

As an active leader within PPNK, Howard served on the Steering Committee from its early days. Even after being diagnosed with cancer in late 2018, his dedication did not waver. He continued to participate in PPNK calls and gatherings, particularly those in Southern California. When PPNK developed the Peace Treaty for Korea overture to the General Assembly, Howard collaborated closely with Shin-Hwa Park to bring the overture to the Pacific Presbytery for concurrence. Despite his illness, he attended presbytery committee meetings to present and advocate for the overture, demonstrating his remarkable resilience and passion.

Howard's absence is deeply felt among PPNK members and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. He was a supportive colleague and a thoughtful conversation partner, particularly on issues of justice and progressive Christian perspectives, even when such topics sparked controversy. His contributions, wisdom, and friendship leave an enduring legacy that will inspire us as we continue our work.

Rev. Howard Kim’s spirit lives on in our collective efforts for justice and peace. It is now our shared responsibility to honor his legacy by carrying forward his loving passion for peace on the Korean Peninsula and beyond. He is greatly missed, but his influence will remain a guiding force in our mission.
